Brainspotting

What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a therapeutic technique designed to help individuals access, process, and release trauma and emotional pain. Brainspotting Therapy is a relatively new form of therapy that developed in 2003.  It operates on the principle that where you look affects how you feel . By using this concept, Brainspotting helps locate, focus on, and release stored emotional and physical pain by focusing on eye position.

How does a Brainspotting therapy look like?

In a Brainspotting therapy session, the process begins with your therapist guiding you to become aware of the various feelings, sensations, and activations within your body. These physical cues are often linked to emotional experiences or trauma. Your therapist helps you identify and locate these sensations, bringing them into conscious awareness. Once this groundwork is laid, the therapist assists you in finding your "Brainspot." A "Brainspot" is a specific eye position that is associated with the emotional or energetic activation of a traumatic or emotionally charged issue stored within the brain.

During the session, the therapist might also use bilateral music to enhance the therapeutic process. This type of music, played through headphones, alternates between your left and right ears. The rhythmic and alternating sounds in this type of music can support deeper brain-body integration, helping to maintain focus and facilitate emotional release. By guiding your gaze to a precise point, Brainspotting establishes a powerful connection between your body and mind, allowing for the release and resolution of deeply held emotions and memories.

Sometimes, individuals may not feel comfortable sharing specific details of their traumatic experiences, or they might find it difficult to put those feelings into words. In some cases, trauma can be so deeply embedded that verbalizing it becomes nearly impossible. Despite this, Brainspotting offers a unique therapeutic approach where verbal expression isn't necessary for healing to take place. Unlike other forms of therapy, Brainspotting does not require you to articulate past experiences or relive painful memories directly, allowing you to process trauma in a safe and non-verbal way.
